Michael Stewart was born in Calgary, Alberta and played his minor hockey in the US college system with the Michigan State University. In 1990 he was a highly ranked defenseman and was taken in the first round, 13th overall by the New York Rangers. He played 3 years in the NCAA before moving on to pro-hockey with the Binghamton Rangers of the AHL. He was in the Rangers system for 3 years before moving on to the Springfield Falcons and the Detroit Vipers. The 1996-97 saw Michael Stewart spend a season with the Canadian National team. He then went on to have 3 seasons with the Canucks affiliate, the Manitoba Moose of the IHL. Mike wasn't able to crack the NHL lineup and began playing in Europe, spending a year with the Frankfurt Lions and the last two seasons with Heraklith VSV EC.
